The Poblado Plaza Hotel Medellin is right next to the Oviedo shopping mall right on the Avenida Poblado.

A relatively pricey hotel, the Poblado Plaza Hotel Medellin has friendly staff and has a welcoming restaurant where we sometimes go for breakfast to have pancakes.

Location

With all the development that's taken place on the Avenida Poblado, the hotel is pretty much right in the heart of it all. There are several new malls lining this, the most heavily trafficated road in El Poblado. 200 meters up the road is the new Santa Fe mall, known to be the largest in Latin America and literally next to the hotel is the Oviedo mall that has a convenient supermarket on the basement floor in addition to a good selection of restaurants, cinemas and shops of course.

Next to the hotel, there is also a McDonalds and a number of other restaurants. You can walk along the Avenida el Poblado in the direction of downtown and get a real sense of this part of town with cafes dotted along the busy street.

Really, the location is excellent - there's no doubt about it.

Breakfast at the hotel

Fruit again and eggs in any shape or form, excellent American-style pancakes, bacon if you desire, good selection of white breads (Colombia is not big on the wholegrain culture) and excellent coffee.

Right next to the fancy Oviedo Mall where you can shop till you drop, watch a movie or go to the excellent supermarket there that belongs to the Pomona chain.

The Hotel

Unfortunately however, I find it hard to recommend the Poblado Plaza hotel Medellin. The gym area is not much to brag about, a bit tacky even, and the location is just too close to a major road. The hotel doesn't quite live up to your expectations of a 5 star hotel which is a definition I find being applied incorrectly far too often in Medellin. Or at best, the definition is becoming meaningless.

There is no swimming pool either but a small spa on the top floor that I once looked at and am afraid to say, it didn't look very charming and lacked facilities.

It's biggest asset is friendly and welcoming staff and if you want to be right on top of the biggest concentration of malls in the city, then this might be a suitable place.
