Movistar Colombia

Movistar Colombia is a mobile phone operator owned by Telefonica Moviles and it operates in Spain and in many Latin American countries as Movistar. The name Movistar has been in use in Spain since 1995 when their GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) services were launched and, it is now the biggest carrier in the country with 22 million mobile customers offering the widest coverage.

In April 2005, the name was adopted worldwide after Telefonica Moviles purchased BellSouth’s operation branches in South America. On the same year, O2 was purchased though the brand was announced to remain the same in the UK, Germany and the Republic of Ireland.

Movistar Colombia’s main competitor in the country and in Latin America is America Movil, which markets its services under the brands Claro, Telcel, Porta and Comcel.
