Maria Full of Grace - the award winning film about a Colombian "mule"

Maria Full of Grace is a movie that tells the story of a 17 year old Colombian girl that needs to make money urgently because of pregnancy.

Maria is offered US$ 5000 to ship cocaine in capsules that she must swallow before her flight to the United States.

I'm not entirely sure, just how much I agree with its portrayal of the "harsh realities" of Colombian rural life. This is after all, fiction and not fact. Incidentally, it was shot in Ecuador, not Colombia.

Yes, this sort of thing certainly happens here but as always the portrayal is of the exception as opposed to the norm and that's fine except that Colombian films are so heavily weighted toward drugs and violence that they create a very negative impression.

Colors of the Mountain

Another recent film that has had some international success, but to a far lesser degree, is Colors of the Mountain. The story is about the perspective of young kids in what appear to be a story set perhaps 10 years ago. The kids are far more interested in playing football than in the political ongoings but things escalate and eventually, most the inhabitants of a tiny community flee due to infiltration by Guerrillas.

The main issue for the kids however, is that their football was kicked into a minefield so they can no longer play.
