Luxury Hotels in Colombia
Over the last 5 or so years, the number of luxury hotels in Colombia has increased significantly. Tourism has taken off and hotels are popping up all over the country, not only in the major cities. There has also been the emergence of top-notch boutique hotels and in many ways, this is where the most interesting development has occurred.
Bogota
Possibly the finest of all the luxury hotels in Colombia, is the Hotel Casa Medina in Bogota. Exclusive, high-priced and elegant, if you want to stay in the capital in style, this is the place to go.The Hotel Tequendama Crown Plaza is overpriced and silly. If you're into that price range, the Casa Medina is a better bet. If you need to impress someone who can't tell the difference, then and only then, could the Tequendama makes sense.
Cartagena
Hotel Sofitel, part of the French chain, is without question, considered the place to be if you want to visit the spectacular Spanish Colonial old town in comfort and style. One of the main differences between the Sofitel and other hotels within the walls of the old town, is its size. There is a large courtyard just inside the entrance where you can cool off from the heat, have a drink, snacks or order food from the restaurant. There is also a large swimming pool and plenty of amenities.
A room at the Casa Quero:
Casa Quero is a luxury boutique hotel. Strictly speaking, this is a boutique hotels and as such, there is less on offer. That said, the service and atmosphere of the hotel can't be improved on. The rooms are extremely elegant and clean and the roof terrace is wonderful for a drink or to take in the view of the old town, especially at night when the breeze makes it very comfortable.
Medellin
This is a tough call and in some ways, I think Medellin is lacking a bit in terms of luxurious hotels given its size. If you want amenities such as a large gym, pool, tennis courts etc., the Hotel Intercontinental is still the place to stay. The outdoor restaurant by the pool, leaves a lot to be desired however and is an element that needs to be addressed for me to fully endorse the standard of this hotel. For style without the fuss and in many ways more elegant, the Hotel Park 10 is top class but lacks a swimming pool for instance. The Dann Carlton is highly overrated in my opinion.
Zona Cafetera
Approaching the Hacienda San Jose:
It's interesting to see that not all of the finest luxury hotels in Colombia are located in the major cities.
Hacienda San Jose,
10 minutes outside Pereira is a exquisite and excellent value for money. Hotel Zasagua, just beyond Hacienda San Jose, is a bit pricier and has a spa and fairly descent restaurant. However, having had lunch there and looked around the rooms that are nice admittedly, and very large if you go for one of the larger suites, I can't help but feel the place is a bit overpriced and pretentious.
