Hacienda San Jose

Located about 10 minutes to the West of the city of Pereira on the main road to Cartago, Hacienda San Jose is quite possibly the best hotel I've ever stayed at.

Prices vary depending on high and low season from US$ 172 to US$ 153 for a double. You just don't get this sort of attention to detail for that price any more.

That's a huge statement, but I urge you to take my word for it.

Hacienda San Jose lies is in the heart of the Coffee triangle of Colombia and therefore, offers a fantastic location from where you can go for drives to the surrounding parks or cities such as Manizales or Armenia.

There are two floors and a balcony that runs along the side of the upper floor where you can sit and read, have a drink or connect to their the Net through wi-fi.

There are fans in the ceilings but no air-conditioning that we found was not necessary but you might want to be aware of this.

This is about charm as opposed to staying in a corporate box where in my opinion, they pull it off and at a very reasonably price to match. I intend to go back for a long-weekend at some point in the future.

The building is set within a huge garden with centuries old trees and flowers in abundance.

You can go for stunning walks on the dirt road outside the hotels that is within a gated community and therefore, very safe. I suggest leaving the hotels gardens and taking a right as you get onto the "main" dirt road. From there you can walk for an hour or so with views of the surrounding mountains, lush vegetation and wildlife.

The menu is very good with excellent steak and seafood. They also serve pasta. You can eat in several different areas. There is a dining room upstairs and downstairs in addition to a very nice table upstairs on the balcony overlooking the pool. You can request to eat in the gardens with lanterns if you - the place is very romantic to say the least.

The service is warm and friendly. They will go out of their way to organize things the way you like or to rearrange beds and so on. We went their with our 4-month old baby and my mum and they took every care to make our stay comfortable and relaxing. You get the impression they adapt to their guests very quickly.

There is a jacuzzi to the side of the pool and service is friendly and personable.

This is a beautiful and relaxing getaway with high-class service. Do not however, expect fancy or plenty of amenities, that's not what they focus on.

I might mention that ex-president Uribe stayed here a while ago.
