Empresas Publicas de Medellin

Empresas Publicas de Medellin otherwise known as EPM, is difficult to avoid if you live in Medellin. They are the main provider for utilities such as gas, water and electricity.

They also own UNE, which is the biggest Internet, television and cable provider in Medellin.

I want to be perfectly clear that I'm not impressed with this company. They are expensive, have poor customer service and telephone support and frankly, there are a lot of blackouts in addition to loss of or very slow periods, where the Internet is concerned.

It is particularly UNE that fails to impress. Internet speed and cost is extremely high relative to the U.S. for example and waiting for a new connection to be installed can be a real test of patience. Also, the Internet, depending on where you are in the city, is often disrupted due to heavy rain or some other unknown reason.

When UNE were installing ADSL in my new apartment last year, they arrived so late in the day (after I had been waiting the whole day, because they can't give a narrower slot) that they did not manage to complete the installation. The tech guy was kind of rude to be honest.

The same is true for electricity. Where I currently work, in Castropol, I have had about 3-4 blackouts over the last month. The Net has also been down on numerous occasions and is frequently painfully slow. If you call to complain or to say that you're not getting the speed you're paying for, service tends to be terrible.

Telmex - the alternative

The alternative for telecommunications.

Mexican owned Telmex is a cheaper alternative that my wife will be getting soon for her newly opened store. People are so used to using UNE that they tend to not want to change the provider and seem to not be aware of the fact that what they're getting is really quite bad on an international level.

Empresas Publicas de Medellin - thumbs down, but they can be impossible to avoid for utilities. There you have it.
