El Colombiano Medellin

El Colombiano Medellin, is the main newspaper of both Medellin and the surrounding region, second in size only to the national El Tiempo.

The newspaper, that has a large online presence, is useful for classifieds such as property and rental, car sales, movie times and some information about what's going on. The site also cites the Colombian Peso/ US$ exchange rate that can be useful. Check them out at:

www.elcolombiano.com

Property listings

As stated, it's ok for property listings and if you happen to be in a position of selling and apartment here in Medellin, it's fairly useful for this purpose – something I did personally some years ago and it produced results.

Movie Times & Televion listing

Sorry to be so basic, but let's face it, you might actually need this info that can be found at:

www.elcolombiano.com/cine.asp

Note that you need to make sure that the film is in English with Spanish subtitles if you don't understand Spanish. It should clearly say “Subtitulada” next to the listing because if it doesn't, you're in trouble.

You also have TV listings.

So-so newspaper

As a newspaper on the whole, I'm not particularly impressed and find the section of main interest is the financial section that gives a sense of what's happening economically. The sports section has never interested me much in any paper, making me a bit of an exception it seems, and the cultural section is fairly limited to say the least. The political element is ok but lacks any real depth and analysis.

There's a strange thing about the paper, every few pages, there's a small English translation for the Spanish counterpart but almost always, it reads more as propaganda and fluff than anything of any real substance.

Good for Learning Spanish

So, after this slaughter of El Colombiano Medellin, there is one huge benefit to reading it: to learn Spanish. And why not? It's relevant to Medellin and the language is good. Personally, I would never bother to buy the paper version because it's a) a bit outdated to buy newspapers in the first place and b) it's just not interesting enough.

You can usually find a free copy lying around at certain clubs or at Café de Lolita, in which case, I'll always flick through it.
