Colombian Dishes

Colombian dishes vary across the country’s regions thanks to its varied cooking traditions. One thing is certain, Colombian Cuisine may not be entirely vegetarian-friendly as most dishes include different kinds of meat and, along the coasts you can find a wide variety of sea food.

Many visit the country for its beautiful landscapes and tourist attractions, but others come to taste the local flavors that many people talk about in foreign lands. It’s common for people to want to try new things, especially if its food as some may say that a good meal earns anyone’s affection. “Full bellies, happy hearts”.

Big meals

When visiting the country’s tourist attractions you may be presented with many traditional dishes that are carefully prepared with the right amount of ingredients and the proper final appearance, just like many local and famous dishes are prepared.

For example, the Bandeja Paisa is one of these famous Colombian dishes and is served in a platter or tray (bandeja) as the large amount of portions and variety of ingredients prevent it from being served in a single plate. It contains red beans, white rice, ground meat, plantains, chorizo, avocado and other ingredients which make it a perfect meal for anyone willing to share or anyone who’s really hungry.

Another tasteful dish is the Asado Bogotano. The word Asado in many Latin American countries is the equivalent of barbecue. It consists of beef and other meats cooked on a grill with coal or wood. Asados in general are pretty standard and popular around the globe and can have grilled corn, avocado and other vegetables on the side.

Another popular dish is the Sancocho. It’s a popular soup that combines vegetables and large pieces of meat. In Colombia, almost any kid of meat is used along with large pieces of vegetables that vary from region to region.

Smaller Portions

In Colombia, breakfast and dinner meals are considered light meals when compared to what’s served in lunch. Normally, when lunch is served between noon and 2pm you get a soup, a main dish, a drink and most likely a sweet dessert. The basic side you will find on many Colombian Dishes is Arepas. Its bread made of corn similar to a thick pancake and can be eaten with butter, just like you would with normal bread.

In many regions, breakfast is quite standard and includes fruit juice, coffee or hot chocolate, eggs and bread. In some regions a milk soup is served with or without a poached egg and it is called Changua.

Among the desserts you can find in Colombia there’s Arroz en Leche which is basically rice soaked in milk served in a bowl, usually sweetened with sugar and cinnamon. Similar to it is the Arroz con Coco (Rice with Coconut) and Mazamorra, consists of white corn well cooked in water and sweetened with sugar and milk.
