What are you looking for in Colombian airlines?
- Are you looking for safety?
- Low cost perhaps?
- Or ease of online bookings?
Whatever your reasons, isn't a solid company with a good track record the most important thing?
There are several Colombian airlines but in my opinion, only a few are worth considering seriously.
Begin with the best. Avianca is a major Latin American airline, which means they have the necessary resources to run a highly professional company.
I like them for the following reasons:
- Service - friendly and courteous
- Website is solid - not perfect however.
- New planes - recently the planes have been great, especially to Madrid
I will nearly always go for Avianca as my first option. Their Colombian website finally offers bookings with foreign credit cards. The system is reliable, although it can take a while to receive your confirmation. The site is also in English. Visit them at:
They fly to all major destinations domestically, in addition to...
- Los Angeles
- New York
...among many other international destinations.
I've flown a few times with the old Aero Republica, now known as Copa.
- Alternative #2, especially for international
Perfectly alright with decent prices if flying through Panama. They fly both domestically and internationally but in my opinion, their planes aren't as nice as Avianca's.
A solid second choice and worth comparing to Avianca on price.
Run by the Colombian Air Force, they aim to cover regions not covered by the bigger airlines.
Check them out if you like, but I don't like their website which is a must for me.
Aerolinea de Antioquia (ADA)
I've flown with ADA from the local Medellin airport to Capurgana. A bumpy ride in a small, twin propeller place. We landed in Capurgana on a small strip that is quite dramatic when descending through the jungle and hills on all sides.
- Domestic flights to small airports
Perfectly ok and at times, the only option for local flights to smaller destinations.
- Cheap for domestic flights
- Website not in English
A cheap alternative for domestic flights and to Fort Lauderdale in the U.S. You will probably find slightly cheaper domestic flights with this airline than both Copa and Avianca.
There website does not have an English section. For a lot of tourists, that makes it fairly useless.
Known as a low-cost operator, I never seem to find the routes I'm traveling covered, nor such low prices. They serve destinations where other operators don't fly so that explains it.
- Covers destinations not served by other airlines
- Are they really that cheap?
Looking over the list, I still think Avianca is the top pick, especially for service and comfort. For out of the way destinations, ADA, Easy Fly, Aires and Satena are all worth looking at, with Aires most likely being the cheapest.
Even for domestic, I must admit that I'll go to Avianca first. There you have it.
